SERVICES

Bone Densitometry

To accurately diagnose osteoporosis (loss of calcium in the bones), the center has installed an enhanced form of X-ray technology called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) the industry standard for diagnosing osteoporosis. DEXA is a quick, painless procedure that takes less than 30 minutes using a small beam of low-dose X-rays, less than one-tenth the dose of a standard chest X-ray.

Computed Tomography (CT)

A computed tomography (CT) scan uses a series of X-ray beams to create cross-sectional images. A computer reconstructs these “slices” to produce the 3-D image. The result is a picture with greater detail than traditional X-rays which means more accurate information for a more accurate diagnosis. CT technology is beneficial in many parts of the body such as the chest, abdomen, pelvis, or an arm or leg. It also takes pictures of body organs, blood vessels, bones and the spinal cord revealing minute details.

Virtual Colonoscopy is a new imaging advancement comparable to traditional optical colonoscopy. This minimally invasive exam is available at Cowles Clinic, one of the few centers outside of Georgia's major medical facilities to offer the procedure. Virtual Colonoscopy uses computed tomography (CT) to produce two- and three-dimensional images of the colon from the rectum to the lower end of the small intestine. This procedure, like traditional colonoscopy, is used to diagnose disease which may include polyps, diverticulosis and cancer. Virtual Colonoscopy is designed as an alternative screening tool for low risk patients – those without symptoms or strong family history of colon cancer.

The exam is an outpatient procedure normally requiring less than 30 minutes. Advantages to the patient are a more comfortable exam requiring less time and no sedation. Preparation prior to the exam is more tolerable with the patient receiving a specific package meal plan. Normal activity can be resumed immediately following the procedure.

Short Bore MRI

Unlike X-rays or CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images are created by using a magnetic field, radio waves and a computer. This noninvasive, diagnostic test gives detailed views of the soft tissues of the body in slices or cross-sections. The pictures can be taken from the side, front or from the bottom. This technology is beneficial in diagnosing strokes, tumors, injury and disc herniations.

A Short-Bore MRI is about half the length of a standard MRI machine allowing an exam with less enclosure. Depending upon the part of the body being scanned, less of the patient is inside of the MRI tube. If pictures are being taken of the head, the patient's feet will project from the other end of the tube. Patients with an aversion to tight spaces may experience a more tolerable exam with less anxiety.

Digital X-Ray

One of the newest advancements in radiography is digital X-ray. This scanning system captures improved images with greater review efficiency that is approximately 60 percent faster than with traditional film. Patients benefit from a shorter exam time that typically requires less radiation with clearer images.

Additional Imaging Services at Cowles Clinic

Ultrasound technology is available on the campus through individual physician practices. Vascular, Cardiac and Urological Ultrasound studies are performed through the offices of Vascular Institute of Georgia, The Atlanta Cardiology Group and Cowles Clinic Center for Urology.
