Dr. Michael Skaliy has been part of the Lake Oconee community for twenty years. He is double board certified in Pain Management and Anesthesia. He has been practicing interventional pain management in Atlanta for over 25 years and has been performing injections into all areas of the body. He is now excited to add Stem Cell Therapy and PRP injection to go beyond the temporary pain relief of traditional medication and move into the field of regenerative medicine. He is bringing his regenerative medicine practice (STEMGEN) to the Lake Oconee area. This therapy allows for long term improvement and regeneration of degenerative joints and other body structures.

Dr. Skaliy is among a select group of physicians around the country to offer stem cell therapy and PRP to relieve pain and promote healing. Patients can benefit from a unique non-surgical procedure using stem cell injections. The treatment uses your own body’s repair mechanisms and growth factors to promote healing. Stem cell therapy is used to treat back pain, degenerative hip pain, degenerative knee pain and male and female pattern baldness. PRP is used to treat erectile dysfunction, tennis and golf elbow as well as other conditions.

During the procedure, Dr. Skaliy extracts stem cells from the bone marrow in a patient’s hip or from the adipose tissue with a mini liposuction on stomach area. The stem cells are then injected into the targeted areas.

The stem cells are from the patient’s own body and are not fetal stem cells but your own stem cells. “We take your own stem cells and concentrate them via a centrifudge and then inject them into the degenerative, painful area to reduce pain, increase function and promote regeneration”.

So how do you know if you would be a good candidate for Stem Cell therapy? Take a look at the questions below to better determine if you’re a fit.

What is the benefit of Stem Cell treatment? Stem Cell injections are used for numerous conditions. For back, knee, hip and other joint pain we inject these cells into joints and spinal discs to provide long lasting pain relief from chronic pain. These injections provide a non-invasive non-surgical treatment option to provide long-lasting relief from chronic joint pain.

We also use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) which is obtained by drawing your own blood and centrifuging it to get the concentrated PRP. This PRP can be injected to treat erectile dysfunction, tennis and golf elbow and plantar fasciitis.

Who is a candidate for Stem Cell treatment? In general, Stem Cell injections are advised for painful structures such as hips, knees, shoulders and ankles, as well as ligaments and spinal discs. There are some rare medical issues like leukemia and lymphoma that will preclude you from having a stem cell procedure done but the contraindications to the procedure are few.

Which joints can Stem Cells be applied to? Stem Cell injections can be used for most joints and ligaments in the body as well as other medical conditions.

Where do the Stem Cells come from? Bone marrow and adipose (fat) tissue are the two sources of stem cells that we use. You have hundreds of thousands of stem cells throughout your body. We harvest the bone marrow stem cells from the back of the hip and/or the adipose stem cells by performing a mini liposuction. The source of the stem cells is determined according to the unique needs of each patient and the medical problem.

What is the success rate for Stem Cell injections? Most patients will have relief of pain starting 3 - 6 months post injection. The improvement often continues for years after the stem cell procedure. The success rate for Stem Cell injection in the literature ranges from 70 – 80 % providing increased function and decreased pain.

Does insurance cover Stem Cell therapy? Stem Cell therapy is typically not covered by your insurance company. If you decide you want to explore this treatment option, we will discuss cost and payment options with you. We will work with you to determine if your insurance will pay or if you will need to pay out of pocket for the treatment.
